Biddeford Pool Home, by Wright-Ryan

Evoke tradition while adding contemporary floor plans

This golf course and beach-side retreat began with the demolition of an older family cottage. The owners wanted to keep a traditional exterior and screened porch as an homage to memories of grandparents and childhood beach vacations. Inside, however, a contemporary open concept design allows for family and guests to spread out and entertain. The architect integrated the traditional and open-concept styles by calling for walls of large windows.

The exterior of the home features copper fascia and a spectacularly landscaped garden that blooms continuously from spring through fall. The golf course and coastal landscape become part of the house’s interior design, visible in as many ways possible through the open-concept plan. The millwork by Wright-Ryan is emphasized against the backdrop of white walls and crisp angles, as is the stair railing, fashioned with one continuous piece of cherry.
